About Us

Second Look is a photographic association set up & run by volunteers.

Now in our 10th year Second Look was founded in January 2008 by six Bristol photographers, Second Look is intended to promote creative photography by organising events and providing a showcase for photographic practice. We hope to raise the profile of photography as a public art form and to provide a platform for photographers to promote and develop their work.

We make great art that people in Bristol will want to take part in, talk about and come to see. We put on talks by critically acclaimed photographers because local people deserve to see and work with excellence and quality. We produce exhibitions, events, talks and online visual stories that speak not just to Bristol, but to the whole country and beyond.

Run by volunteers Second Look puts on public events designed to encourage participation in the discipline as well as showcasing the photographic work of its members. Second Look has launched a dedicated Second Look website & run several very successful public events. In May '09 the first ever Second Look Photomarathon attracted over 100 entrants & raised enough funds to pay for the big free photo competition in the summer 'Bristol A Second Look 2009'. In its second year, Bristol A Second Look received 75 entries & over 1,000 people voted to help choose the winner.

In 2010 Second Look held four more group exhibitions (one for each season), and were energetically involved with Bristol’s first ever Festival of Photography, with a huge Photomarathon & a group show. Since then Second Look has held another PhotoMarathon in 2012 and a number of highly successful group exhibitions in the City.

The 2014 "Bristol People" group show was hosted by the gallery at Hamilton House who said it was one of the most visited and successful exhibitions ever held at the venue.

2015 was no exception with the PhotoMarathon 2015 at M-Shed, with a follow up exhibition at Hamilton House held in July, and the members' annual exhibition from September to November at Bocabar Art featuring "Bristol Places".

2016 repeated the success of the PhotoMarathon 2015 at M-Shed, with a follow up exhibition at PaperArts Gallery in July, with an Open Exhibition held at the Hamilton House gallery in March 2017.

2017 A further exhibition of Second Look members' work was held at The Atrium Gallery, ASC, Pembroke Road, Clifton in April where a number of artworks were purchased by an appreciative audience.

2017 repeated the success of the PhotoMarathon 2016 at M-Shed, with a follow up exhibition at the Hamilton House gallery.

2018 A further exhibition at The Atruim Gallery was held in June 2018

2018 repeated the success of the PhotoMarathon 2017 in Millennium Square, with a follow up exhibition at the Hamilton House gallery.

Promoting Creative Photography

"We set up Second Look in order to promote creative photography in Bristol, to help photographers to work together and to run public events that would raise the profile of Bristol photography. We've had many great years since forming in 2008 and our members continue to contribute suggestions for making Second Look better each year." The current membership meets monthly and encourages members to explore different styles and approaches to their photography. This aim is reflected in the work on display in our exhibitions. In addition they have the advantage of seeing and speaking with other photographers who are not normally available to other photographic groups.

The future:
"Our aim is to applaud those working at the frontier of photographic development, to search and discover themselves and find fulfilment in their work, to communicate and to respect the work of others. "

John Brooks, Chair/Coordinator
